Tommy Rickard

About the Artist

Tommy Rickard is a musician born and raised in Northern California. He is a singer/songwriter, drummer and guitarist, currently rooted in both San Francisco and Los Angeles. He started playing drums young and spent his early days in local punk bands, opening shows for the likes of Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Sea Hags, Victim’s Family and Agent Or-ange. A restless search for new challenges, combined with a knack for playing just what songs need, eventually landed Rickard on the road and in the studio with Vain, Linda Perry, Eric Martin, Ronnie Montrose, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and many others, as well as a long list of independent singers, songwriters and pro-ducers. All the while he kept at his studies with Bay Area teaching legend Chuck Brown. While working with Perry, Tommy recorded her Grammy winning song “Beautiful,”which became a #1 single for Christina Aguilera. Tommy has several production projects, a television project in development, teaching, playing live and a new album in production. His previous release Dream CA is available here “Dream California.” He recently completed a successful tour of Europe with his bandmates from Vain. As well as playing on the critically acclaimed, 2011 Vain release, Enough Rope. Tommy also toured the US with former Stone Temple Pilots frontman, Scott Weiland.

We asked... Why Gretsch?

The first time I heard guys like Max Roach, Charlie Watts, and Tony Williams, I knew there was something different about their sound. Of course they were all very different, and all brilliant in their own way. But the thing they had in common was that the great Gretsch sound. The musicality, the dynamics, the projection, and sensitivity in the the drums, to allow each drummer to sound like him or herself. There’s just no comparison. Gretsch drums are simply the best.

Advice

Be fearless, and get out there onstage and in the studio as much as possible. Nothing compares to the experience you get playing live, or when “tape” is rolling.
